Choosing to have a facelift is a significant decision, and understanding the recovery process is an important part of that decision. Knowing what to expect as your face heals can help you prepare for surgery and feel more confident throughout your recovery.
Facelift recovery is different for every patient, but there are some common milestones you can expect. Here at Dr. Brandon Plastic Surgery, we walk you through the process in this blog.
Expect to experience swelling, bruising, tightness, and some discomfort immediately after a facelift.
Your face may look noticeably different from what you expected during these first few days, and that's completely normal. Dr. Brandon may place dressings or a compression garment around your face and neck to help support healing and minimize swelling.
Plan on taking it easy these first days after your procedure. Rest with your head elevated, avoid bending over, and follow our office’s instructions regarding medications, wound care, and activity.
Having someone available to help you during the first day or two can make this period much easier.
You’ll notice swelling and bruising during the first week, and after that, it gradually improves. You may have some numbness or a feeling of tightness around your cheeks, jawline, or ears. These sensations can persist as your nerves recover and usually improve with time.
Dr. Brandon will let you know when it's appropriate to wash your hair, shower, and resume gentle activities. We’ll schedule a follow-up appointment within the first week so he can check your incisions and monitor healing.
Most patients need approximately two weeks before returning to many normal social and work activities, although the exact timeline varies. If your job is physically demanding, you may need additional time.
We usually encourage you to take gentle walks soon after surgery because gentle movement promotes circulation. However, avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, and activities that increase blood pressure until Dr. Brandon clears you.
Don't rush this part of your recovery. Your body needs time to heal.
The staff here at Dr. Brandon Plastic Surgery gives you specific instructions for caring for your incisions. Keep them clean and protected, and avoid applying products to the surgical areas unless Dr. Brandon recommends them.
Protecting your skin from the sun is especially important during the healing process. Sun exposure can make scars more noticeable and may affect the appearance of healing skin.
One of the hardest parts of facelift recovery can be the waiting before your full results develop.
You'll notice improvements as the swelling goes down, but your ultimate results won't be visible immediately. Subtle swelling can linger for several weeks or longer, and some areas may feel numb or firm while your tissues continue to settle.
As healing progresses, your facial contours should look increasingly natural. The goal of a modern facelift isn't to make you look like a different person. It's to create a refreshed, more youthful appearance while maintaining your natural facial character.
A facelift is a surgical procedure, and you’ll need time to heal. Swelling, bruising, tightness, numbness, and temporary changes in sensation are all possible during recovery.
The best thing you can do is follow our instructions, keep your follow-up appointments, nourish your body, stay hydrated, and give yourself permission to rest.
If you're considering a facelift, Dr. Brandon can walk you through the expected recovery timeline based on the specific procedure you're having and your individual health and goals. Knowing what to expect can make the process feel much less uncertain and help you approach surgery with confidence.
