Getting a facelift from a qualified, experienced plastic surgeon like Dr. Brandon Elnekaveh is the foundation of beautiful results, but your recovery habits matter, too. The choices you make in the days and weeks after surgery can support healing, minimize swelling, and help you enjoy the best possible outcome.
The healing process plays a significant role in how you look and feel in the weeks and months following your procedure. Here at Dr. Brandon Plastic Surgery, we recommend the following seven tips to optimize your facelift results.
Sleep is when your body performs much of its healing and tissue repair. During the first several weeks after surgery, aim for seven to nine hours of quality sleep each night.
Also aim to sleep with your head elevated, typically at a 30- to 45-degree angle, to help reduce swelling. Many patients find that sleeping in a recliner or using several pillows makes this more comfortable during the early recovery period.
Your body requires extra nutrients to rebuild tissue after surgery. Focus on meals that contain lean protein, whole grains, healthy fats, and colorful vegetables and fruits. Also, make sure you stay well hydrated.
Think in terms of nutrients. Foods high in vitamin C, zinc, and antioxidants support collagen production and wound healing. Limit highly processed foods, excess sugar, and alcohol to reduce inflammation.
Your skin following a facelift is especially vulnerable to ultraviolet (UV) damage. Even brief sun exposure may contribute to prolonged redness, pigmentation changes, and premature aging.
Be sun-smart if you choose to go outside. Wear a wide-brimmed hat outdoors, seek shade whenever possible, and apply sunscreen once our office has said your incisions have healed sufficiently.
Protecting your skin from the sun remains one of the best long-term investments in your facelift results.
Movement is important for circulation and recovery. Dr. Brandon recommends short walks soon after surgery to promote healthy blood flow. But, you should only return to more strenuous activities, like heavy lifting, vigorous exercise, and high-impact workouts, after Dr. Brandon clears you.
Trying to "push through" recovery too quickly can increase swelling and delay healing.
Dr. Brandon carefully places facelift incisions so they’re as discreet as possible, but proper scar care helps them continue to fade over time.
In the weeks and months after your facelift, Dr. Brandon may recommend scar management that includes silicone gel or sheets, gentle massage, or moisturizing products.
Remember that scars continue to fade for up to a year or longer, gradually becoming softer and less noticeable.
Facelift recovery doesn't end after the first few weeks.
While much of the swelling improves within the first month, subtle swelling reduces over the next several months. The tissues gradually soften, settle, and reveal the final contours over time.
Taking progress photos every few weeks can help you appreciate changes that may be difficult to notice day to day.
Regular follow-up visits allow Dr. Brandon to monitor your healing, answer questions, and address any concerns you may have.
These appointments also provide an opportunity to discuss skincare, maintenance treatments, or nonsurgical options that may help preserve your results for years to come.
A facelift can provide long-lasting facial rejuvenation; invest in healthy habits to help protect your investment.
